Sims Recycling Solutions (SRS) announced on Wednesday that it had been awarded the Environmental Performance Certificate (EPC) by the UAE Ministry of Environment and Water.
The award comes in recognition that SRS are delivering environmentally friendly solutions to organisations in the UAE for old ICT, telecoms and electronic devices. The firm assures businesses that these items will be recycled using world-class processes, reducing the need for landfill sites.
The criteria for the award is that a company or organisation must demonstrate how it is reducing environmental impact within the UAE and working to reduce the UAE’s environmental impact.
In particular, the award recognised Sims’ contribution to the reduction of material going to municipality landfills. Having learnt about the company’s processes, and the volumes of materials it recycles both locally and globally, the Ministry of Environment team felt compelled to give SRS the award.
The company was able to demonstrate that its handling processes maintained a full audit trail, showing how and where material was handled. Compliance with international standards ensured that SRS shipped no material to countries where the shipping of retired ICT assets could be deemed illegal or immoral.
This is not the only environmental award that SRS has been linked to this week. Its parent company, Sims Metal Management, was named as one of the top 100 global most sustainable corporations for the fifth consecutive year at the 2013 World Economic Forum. The firm was placed 15th overall.
