Cisco Systems Inc. and EMC Corp. are in talks to develop a joint venture company that would provide technology services to large corporations. The move follows a pairing by the two companies earlier this year to develop a new blade server sold by Cisco, and it would move both companies closer toward being full data center systems providers.
According to a report in The Wall Street Journal the joint venture, code-named Alpine, will target large businesses and install and maintain networking and server products from Cisco and high-end storage arrays from EMC.
Cisco with its new blade server business is already taking on IBM and Hewlett-Packard Co., which have both been strong partners of Cisco in selling servers that use switches to communicate across data centers.
The new Cisco-EMC venture will place it in an even more competitive standing against IBM and HP.
