MobileAccess, a global provider of enterprise wireless solutions, in partnership with Sprint has extended the MobileAccess Universal Wireless Network to Clarian Health’s three hospital campuses located in Indianapolis. With this state-of-the-art wireless infrastructure, Methodist Hospital, Indiana University Hospital and Riley Hospital for Children can now support the next-generation medical applications and communication devices that enhance the quality of patient care and boost the efficiency of mobile clinicians and staff.
Clarian Health originally installed MobileAccess technology in 2005 throughout its 500,000 square foot Clarian North Medical Center. With the proven success of that system, Clarian Health tapped MobileAccess and Sprint to deploy the Universal Wireless Network throughout its other sites in the Indianapolis area. Covering more than 4 million square feet of Clarian facilities, this new multi-service deployment provides pervasive coverage for Sprint’s Converged Network Solutions (CNS) and supports a variety of 802.11a/b/g wireless LAN services. This installation will help Clarian Health continue its delivery of high-quality, cutting-edge care to the more than 900,000 patients who visit its facilities each year.
“In working with MobileAccess and Sprint, Clarian Health has found a cost-effective, proven, in-building wireless network that can support our diverse mobility needs and assist us in delivering superior patient care throughout our medical campuses,” said Richard Johnson, chief information officer for Clarian Health.
Clarian’s clinicians, staff, patients and visitors can enjoy access to wireless voice and data services from Sprint and other operators throughout the campus, using the mobile phones and PDAs of their choice. The breadth of wireless coverage supports use of untethered clinical devices and applications including Patient Keeper data management system, Alaris wireless IV pumps, Vocera badges and Cisco 7921 VoIP phones. Additionally, maintenance and emergency response personnel are equipped with Sprint’s Nextel Direct Connect push-to-talk service for nearly constant communications throughout the campus. With MobileAccess’ flexible solution, Clarian can easily integrate future wireless services and applications without disrupting any hospital operations.
“Healthcare clinicians and staff are information-dependent and expect their mobile devices to work virtually anywhere and anytime throughout hospital facilities,” said Darlene Braunschweig, vice president of CNS for Sprint. “Reliable communication is critical in healthcare. Together, with the reliability of Sprint’s two robust networks and the MobileAccess infrastructure, we empower healthcare facilities, such as Clarian, with flexible, multi-service communications tools that adapt to the evolving requirements of their mobile workforces.”
“Driven by the constant challenges of delivering high-quality patient care while maximizing internal efficiencies, the healthcare industry was one of the early adopters of wireless technology,” said Cathy Zatloukal, president and CEO of MobileAccess. “From the start, Clarian Health recognized the strategic value of installing a state-of-the-art communications network that provides business value measured by dramatically improved patient care, clinical workflow and productivity.”
