HP releases 100TB/hr backup system

Hewlett-Packard yesterday announced new deduplication tools for its StoreOnce family of backup appliances that enable performance of up to 100TB per hour and data recovery of 40TB per hour.

The company also launched its Data Protector 7 Software product, which identifies unstructured data – such as social media, video and email – and prioritises how that information is protected on storage systems. Data Protector 7 is based on Autonomy’s Intelligent Data Operating Layer (IDOL) server software, which can index unstructured data within an enterprise, providing users with a search-based interface.

“HP Data Protector is the industry’s first unified data protection solution that utilises an intelligent data-management approach to seamlessly protect data based on its meaning across on-premise, hybrid and cloud environments, while optimising business application performance,” said David Jones, CEO of Autonomy, an HP subsidiary.

HP announced the next-generation of its StoreOnce data deduplication software, a federated solution that monitors data across an enterprise to ensure duplicate data is not being stored.

HP’s StoreOnce Catalyst software for the HP StoreOnce B6200 backup system enables users to deduplicate data on application or backup servers before the data is transferred across the storage network. The the B6200 is capable of storing up to 48TB in a single node.

The new Data Protector 7 software features governance tools that enable contextual backup and recovery of information. Users can back up, find and recover information based on the meaning and concepts contained within the data, HP said.

HP also said it has improved the efficiency of server and storage connectivity with HP Virtual Connect Direct-Attach Fibre Channel for its 3PAR storage systems. The Virtual Connect Fibre Channel can eliminate the need for more complex, multitier storage area networks (SANs) by offering a single console view of multiple 3PAR SANs, the company stated.

The HP B6200 StoreOnce backup system is available immediately worldwide, with a U.S. list price starting at $250,000 for a fully usable entry-level system.

HP StoreOnce Catalyst software and integration with HP Data Protector 7 and Symantec NetBackup is also available immediately. Additional integration with Symantec Backup Exec will be available in August.

HP Virtual Connect Direct-Attach Fibre Channel Storage for 3PAR is currently available in limited quantities to early-adopter clients and will be available worldwide later this year.

HP Data Protector 7 is also available immediately. The cloud-based backup option is offered separately via a monthly subscription agreement.
