Qatar Railways Company (Qatar Rail) has announced plans to make Doha Metro the fastest driverless train network in the Middle East.
The first phase of the Doha Metro is expected to be complete in 2020, when the project’s 37 metro stations are expected to be operative, with an average journey time of two minutes between adjacent stations.
Doha Metro aims to be one of the fastest driverless trains in the world and the fastest in the region, able to reach 100 km per hour.
The Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani visited life-sized mock-ups of the Doha Metro and Lusail Tram trains, and was given an explanation by Qatar Rail about the technology used in both trains, as well as their interior and exterior design, safety features and services future users can expect.
“In total, 75 trains – consisting of three cars, one of which will be for Gold and Family Class and two for Standard class – will be delivered to Doha Metro,” Qatar Railways Company said in a statement. “Gold will have 16 seats, family 26 seats and standard 88 seats. Designed and built to world-class standards of modernity and innovation, they remain deeply rooted in the country’s history and community.”
