The appointment which is effective immediately will see Watt oversee the strategic direction and profitable growth of Avnet’s value-added IT solutions distribution business throughout the region. Watt will report to Phil Gallagher, president, Avnet Technology Solutions, global. Previously, Watt served as president of Worldwide Distribution for Bell Micro.
Watt has more than 20 years of experience in the IT distribution industry. He joined Bell Micro in April 2004 as president of Bell Microproducts Europe. Between April 2004 and May 2008, Watt was responsible for purchasing and integrating two significant acquisitions whilst returning the business to profit. In May 2008, Watt was appointed president of Worldwide Distribution, where his focus has been on improving the returns the businesses make in all regions.
“Watt has the passion and vision to lead Avnet Technology Solutions, EMEA, to a prosperous and exciting future as the premier value-added technology solutions distributor,” said Gallagher. “He has a deep understanding of the technology industry and a proven track record that I believe make him uniquely suited to the position.
Avnet’s acquisition of Bell Micro adds many talented people to our team throughout the business. We plan to build upon the capabilities of both organisations to provide market-leading technology solutions and services, delivered by an experienced, knowledgeable team wholly dedicated to accelerating our customers’ and suppliers’ growth.”
Prior to Bell Micro, Watt was president of Tech Data EMEA. Watt joined the organisation in 1988 via First Software, a UK distributor, which evolved to become Frontline Distribution and subsequently part of Computer 2000, a Tech Data company. During his tenure at Tech Data, Watt was responsible for many developments, including the acquisition of three companies, the implementation of major restructuring programs, the development of a centralised purchasing organisation, and the expansion of the company’s e-commerce capabilities.
“It is a great honour to be named to this leadership position at Avnet, and I plan to quickly engage with the employees, customers and suppliers of both organisations,” said Watt. “Bell Micro’s product lines and technical expertise will increase Avnet’s value-added solutions for the data centre and complement Avnet’s existing suppliers and service expertise, creating opportunities for cross selling. I am committed to helping this team, as well as our customers and suppliers, take advantage of all the new opportunities available to both organisations.”
Watt assumes the role previously held by Dick Borsboom. After more than three years as president of Avnet Technology Solutions, EMEA, Borsboom leaves behind a strong organisation that has performed well throughout the industry downturn. He will assist Watt with the transition and will now focus on Avnet Technology Solutions’ business in Turkey, the Middle East and Africa, amongst other strategic initiatives.
