Dubai’s General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) has recently announced that 18 new smart gates are now fully operational at Terminal 2, which will complete the immigration process within seven to 10 seconds.
The new gates – including 10 at the arrivals area and eight at the departures area, according to the GDRFA.
According to the firm, the smart gates are equipped with technologies that can scan passengers’ eyes, fingers and faces. It has indicators that guide passengers through the steps required to complete the process. At the end of it, passengers are issued a transit pass that can be used every time they pass through the airport.
The smart gates at Dubai airports will replace passport officials’ platforms with a view to reducing the human involvement factor in application of Dubai’s 10X initiative, according to WAM.
Dubai first launched smart gates in 2017, and Dubai airports now have a total of 122 smart gates including 30 in Terminal 1, 18 in Terminal 2, 64 in Terminal 3, and 10 at the Al Maktoum International Airport.
Brigadier Talal Ahmad Al Shanqiti, assistant director-general of Airport Passport Sector, reportedly said, “Travellers can walk through the smart gates by using their biometric passports, Emirates ID and smartphone after installing the UAE Wallet application.”
By 2030, the smart gates at Dubai airports will replace passport officials’ platforms with a view to reducing the human involvement factor.
