The Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, DoH, the regulator of the healthcare sector in the emirate, has urged all healthcare providers in the capital to document medical tourism patients’ records using its “Shafafiya” e-portal, effective as of September 2018.
The move is part of Abu Dhabi’s efforts to enhance that quality of care in the city and its push to promote medical tourism.
Dr. Asma Al Mannaei, Director of the Healthcare Quality Division, said, “The new protocol is in line with our commitment to providing premium quality of healthcare services for patients in Abu Dhabi and positioning Abu Dhabi as a leading hub for medical tourism.
He noted that with a solid healthcare infrastructure, cutting-edge technology and qualified health professionals, Abu Dhabi is already becoming an attractive medical tourism destination choice for patients from all across the world.”

The portal will ease the record of all medical tourism patients’ medical information including diagnosis, clinical signs, year of initial diagnosis and presence on admission regardless of their insurance coverage.
Last year, the Department of Health and the Department of Culture and Tourism signed a partnership that will see a worldwide marketing campaign to establish the city as a centre for medical tourism, with top institutions like the Cleveland Clinic and the Imperial College London Diabetes Centre.
In addition, the Health Authority – Abu Dhabi (Haad) and the Abu Dhabi Tourism and Culture Authority (TCA Abu Dhabi) have also signed an agreement to establish a medical tourism network. Aimed at to serving patients coming from abroad particularly from Russia, China and India, the system ensures that visas, hospital bookings, translation services and aftercare are handled efficiently for the patient and family members.
