President Donald Trump has wasted no time on walking back AI policy introduced by the outgoing Biden administration, following his inauguration in Washington yesterday afternoon.
Trump signed an executive order just hours after taking office, which officially rescinded the existing policy on regulating AI, which was introduced by Biden’s government in October 2023.
The policy was introduced to foster an environment that promoted the safe, secure and trustworthy development and use of AI.
It effectively put the onus on tech companies investing in AI technologies to divulge safety test results and other information of powerful systems back to the government.
The policy was also seen as a major foundation in the building blocks for a US AI Safety Institute, that would create a set of guidelines and best practices for the application of AI technologies.
However, in the immediate aftermath of his landslide US Presidential election in November, Trump was quick to criticise the AI policy introduced the previous October by Biden, labelling it as too stringent and claimed it curtailed market innovation.
It’s evident that despite the fact there is no official AI policy from Trump, whatever will be introduced will have less red tape and be much more open.
Trump has been very vocal in his criticism of David Sack, the crypto AI guru is a strong advocate for technology regulation, and having checks and balances with disruptive technologies like Gen AI.
The race for AI supremacy is a global one, unsurprisingly, China and the USA look like being the two major players, and Trump has said that dominating AI technology is a national security priority.
